I was trying to give my house a new look and decided Building My Own Shutters And Planter Boxes With Weathered Wood that would really add to the exterior of my house. I also wanted a new planter box to hang some ivy on my front porch. I gave it a shot, and now all my neighbors are jealous!
Building Your Own Shutters And Planter Boxes
When building your own shutters and planter boxes, it’s important to consider a few things. For example, what style do you want? Do you want a plain shutter or one with an ornate design? How big should your shutters be? What kind of wood is the best choice for this project?
The answer to all of these questions is weathered wood. Not only does it look beautiful when used in construction projects like shutters and planter boxes, but it also comes at a reasonable price point that many people can afford without having to sacrifice quality or aesthetics.
Another reason why weathered wood is the best choice for items like these: It’s easy on your hands! Since weathered wood tends not to splinter easily, you don’t have to worry about getting injured while working with it. This can make things like construction projects much safer than they would otherwise be without proper precautions taken into consideration beforehand (such as wearing protective gear).
Window Shutters Tutorial
To build window shutters, you’ll need:
- A saw
- Wood glue
- Screws of your choice (I used 2-inch deck screws)
Planter boxes are a bit more complex in terms of supplies but still very doable for the average DIYer. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 x 6 boards for the sides and ends of each box (you will have to cut these down yourself)
- 2 x 4 boards for the top and bottom pieces of each box (again, you’ll have to cut these yourself)
If you’re using weathered wood as I did here’s what else you’ll need:
Why is weathered wood the best choice?
Weathered wood is a natural-looking material that’s easy to find, inexpensive, and easy to work with. It’s also durable and makes a great choice for an outdoor project like building your own shutters or planter boxes.
Wood planter boxes to match the window shutters
If you are looking for a way to add a natural touch to your home, wood planter boxes may be just what the doctor ordered. The process of making one is easy and simple, with the only main requirement being that the wood has been weathered properly. You can use reclaimed lumber for this project if you want something truly unique and rustic-looking, but there are also many places where you can buy pre-made planks that will work just fine. Wood planters can be used inside or outside as long as they are properly sealed so that water doesn’t get into them; they’re perfect for growing herbs on your patio or even flowers in some cases!
The windows look natural!
These shutters and planter boxes are a great way to add natural, rustic appeal to your home. They look like they’ve been there forever, but they are actually brand new! They were built with weathered wood that has been given a distressed look by sanding, chipping, and staining it an earthy tone. The end result is a set of shutters that give the appearance of having been around for years without the hassle and expense of regular maintenance.
I built shutters and planter boxes with weathered wood and they look amazing!
I started with the shutters. I purchased two 2x10s of weathered wood, which was on sale at my local hardware store. I cut each board into four equal parts, which made each shutter about 3 feet long by 12 inches wide.
I used a miter saw to make sure all the corners were 90 degrees and then sanded them smooth to prepare for staining the wood. If you don’t have access to a miter saw (or if you’re not comfortable using one), you can always use something like this [picture] as an alternative solution!
After staining all my slats, I nailed them back together using deck screws so they were sturdy enough to hold up against windy conditions outdoors without falling apart over time like those cheap plastic ones might do over time instead.”
Conclusion
I am very happy with how my window shutters and planter boxes turned out. I spent a lot of time planning this project and researching the best ways to build my own shutters, but it was worth it! I love how they look in my home! This project took a few days from the start to finish because there were so many different steps involved in building them. I will definitely use weathered wood for any future projects around the house too!
