Knife set
Any chef will tell you that good knife are essential kitchen tools. That’s because a sharp blade makes chopping, slicing, and dicing faster and easier. And while most knives come in sets that range from three to eight pieces, it’s always smart to check with your local store before buying one so you can find out which knives are best for your needs. Here are five basic items every home chef needs in their kitchen:
- Knife set. This should include at least three knives: an 8-inch (20 cm) chef’s knife for larger jobs; a 4-inch (10 cm) paring knife for smaller tasks; and an 8-inch bread knife for slicing bread and cakes quickly without crushing them. Most sets come with other tools such as peelers, scissors or spatulas depending on how big the set is – but if not included then consider getting these separately as well!
- Sharpener/honing steel (preferably diamond coated). A dull blade becomes dangerous once it starts sliding off what you’re trying to cut instead of staying put where it belongs – so keeping those edges sharpened throughout use is critical when preparing meals at home! There are many different types available ranging from manual sharpeners to electric ones too – just make sure they’re compatible with whatever type of blade(s) have been purchased beforehand 😉
Tongs
Tongs
Tongs are like the kitchen’s Swiss Army knife: they’re versatile, sturdy, and can be used for everything from flipping meat to placing food on a grill. Use tongs to pick up vegetables while cooking with them (rather than using your hands). Use tongs to move food from the stovetop to the sink if you need to cool or clean it off before serving. You can even use tongs as a makeshift salad fork—just hold onto both ends and dip into your salad bowl! They’re great for holding hot foods while cutting or sautéing as well; just remember not to touch any part of the handle that comes in contact with raw meat or poultry because it may contaminate your food.*
In addition to all these uses, when you buy good quality stainless steel ones (like these), they will last forever! It doesn’t matter how many years down the road you decide that there are better options out there—you can still use those old tongs!
Peeler or peelers
A good peeler is an essential tool for any kitchen. Peelers vary in their shapes and sizes, but they all have one purpose: to help you peel vegetables and fruits. Some models allow you to remove the skin from your produce while leaving the flesh intact, while others will cut off both skin and flesh at once.
As well as peeling carrots, potatoes, and other vegetables; it’s also possible to use a peeler on softer foods like apples or pears (just remember not to go too far back towards the core). You can also use a peeler if you want to remove garlic cloves from their husks without crushing them or losing too much of the clove itself! Finally—if we’re talking about simple tools with multiple uses here—peelers are great for removing ginger from its root as well!
Whisk or whips
A whisk is a great tool for beating egg whites into a fluffy, stiff consistency. It can also be used to whip cream, make sauces and vinaigrettes, and to mix salad dressings or gravy.
Whisk-type beaters are usually made of stainless steel or plastic and come in multiple sizes ranging from 1 cup up to at least 4 cups (1 quart). The size you buy depends on how often you will use it. If you find yourself making large quantities of batter or other foods that require whipping with an electric mixer then invest in the larger sized one. However if all your needs are small then stick with one that suits your needs accordingly so that it doesn’t take up unnecessary space in your kitchen drawers or cupboards!
Rubber spatula
- A rubber spatula is a kitchen tool with many uses.
- You can use it to scrape food off of the sides of a bowl while you’re mixing, or to stir foods together so that no lumps remain. It’s also great for spreading frosting or other toppings on cakes and cupcakes, and scraping the last bits of batter from your mixing bowl when making pancakes or waffles.
- Rubber spatulas come in many different sizes and shapes for different tasks in the kitchen: slotted spoons are good for removing larger pieces from hot oil; long-handled versions are great for stirring deep pots on the stovetop; small ones are ideal for getting into jars with narrow openings. You can even find silicone spatulas designed specifically to withstand high temperatures (which makes them perfect for use with nonstick pans).
- Most importantly though: always remember to keep your rubber spatula clean! If you don’t wash it after each use, bacteria will grow inside which can cause foodborne illness.

Bringing a knife to the kitchen is not enough.

There are 5 must-have kitchen tools that every cook should have in their arsenal!
The best way to keep your knives sharp is with a steel or sharpening steel. It’s faster, more effective and easier than using stones or electric sharpeners, which are messy and can overheat the blade (which will dull it even more!). Also, you can use the back of your knife on this steel as well if its not too blunt (which would require resharpening). We recommend 3 different kinds: one for fine honing, one for medium honing and one for coarse honing.
